A Furnas County Rivalry: Cambridge and Arapahoe Battle on the Court Tuesday Evening

As the snow fell on a chilly Tuesday night, the action in the gym at Cambridge was on fire as the Trojans played host to rival Arapahoe for a girls and boys doubleheader. Neither game was disappointing, as they went down to the wire. Cambridge, though, was able to sweep the games. Both sets of student-athletes couldn't be too upset at the end of the night, though, as school was called off on Wednesday due to the snowstorm coming in.

Back on January 24th, Cambridge and Arapahoe played in the first round of the Girls RPAC Tournament. The Warriors won big, 52-30. This time around, Cambridge got the narrow victory, 47-42.

Cambridge jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but you knew that no one would run away and hide in a game like this. It just had that kind of a feel. The tempo was great from both teams. Arapahoe countered with some buckets of their own shortly after the quick start from Cambridge.

The Trojans took a small lead to the second quarter, 16-13.

In the second period, the game remained tight, and neither team would give in. The score was all knotted up at 26-26 as we went to the half.

In the third, the offense was much harder to come by, and neither team could get much to fall as the defensive intensity was high. Cambridge went to the fourth up 34-30.

In the final quarter, it was a fight until the end.

Cambridge was up 38-34 with 3:22 to go in the game, but Cadence Carpenter trimmed that lead down to 38-36. The teams kept fighting. With just under two minutes to go, Cambridge led 40-38. Cambridge was working their offense, and Chloe Gooden had a nice look at the rim but threw the extra pass to the corner where Aspen Webb was wide open for a three. She hit it, and it was 43-38.

Arapahoe would not give in, though. Sawyer Shafer hit a triple with 26.8 seconds to go and made it 43-42 with Cambridge in the lead.

Cambridge, though, had some free throws from Elisabeth Kubik, Gooden, and Webb to close the game.

We visited with Emmerie Tomlin of Cambridge about the win.

For Arapahoe, Cadence Carpenter scored 13, Sawyer Shafer had 11, Suttyn Shafer had seven, and Clara Hilker scored five.

For Cambridge, Mallory Springer and ASpen Webb had 12, and Elisabeth Kubik and Brooklyn Holtze had nine. Chloe Gooden added four.

Arapahoe is 14-9 and will play at Bertrand on Friday, which is an RPAC Rundown Featured Matchup. Cambridge is 12-9 and will be at Alma on Friday.

In the boys game, we had a great game until the end, but Cambridge came out on top 52-42. Initially, it was a little bit in question what kind of game we would get. It was super clunky; both teams were struggling to get things going on offense. Eventually, though, things got rolling.

Cambridge jumped out to an 11-2 lead, and Arapahoe took a timeout. At that point, Cambridge had triples from Krayton Ruggles and Brady Ahlemeyer. Cambridge then hit another one after the timeout from Hodge Raburn, and the Trojans led 14-2.

Eli Shafer, Will Cacy, Grayson Koller, Alex Diaz, and the rest of the team did a nice job keeping Arapahoe engaged on both ends of the floor.

Then Arapahoe began to take control a little. They closed the gap and trailed 14-9 going to the second. Arapahoe took the lead at 15-14 with 4:30 to go in the half. Arapahoe went on a 15-0 run before Cambridge took a timeout with roughly 3:00 to go before halftime.

Cambridge trailed at halftime 20-17. The interesting stat: Cambridge had six field goals in the half and five of them were three-pointers. Their next two-point bucket didn't come until their 28th point of the game.

In the third period, the teams were competing hard, and neither team could pull away. Cambridge led 34-32 going to the final period.

Arapahoe did a nice job hanging around the majority of the quarter, but Cambridge eventually pulled away.

We visited with Cambridge's Krayton Ruggles after the victory.

Arapahoe was led by Alex Diaz and Will Cacy with nine points, Eli Shafer had eight, and Grayson Koller had seven.

For Cambridge, Brady Ahlemeyer had 23, Hodge Raburn scored 16, and Krayton Ruggles had nine. Maverick Webb didn't score but had a big impact on the game with defense and hustle plays.

Arapahoe is now 2-19 and will be at Bertrand on Friday, an RPAC Rundown Featured Matchup. Cambridge is now 10-9 and will be at Alma on Friday.
