Bertrand Hosts Maywood-Hayes Center Ahead of RPAC Basketball Tournament



On Tuesday night, Bertrand hosted Maywood-Hayes Center as each team played their final games before the RPAC Tournament. On this night, Maywood-Hayes Center won the girls game and Bertrand took the boys.


In the girls game, Maywood-Hayes Center struggled on offense as Bertrand was tough on defense, but eventually, the Wolves were too much as they won 42-13 over Bertrand.


Neither team could get things rolling on offense in the opening quarter, as they both were strong on defense. The first bucket came at the 3:21 mark in the first as Bertrand was on the scoreboard. The Vikings held onto that narrow lead, and it was 5-0 going to the second.


MHC got things rolling in the second period by scoring 20 points and holding Bertrand to six. It was 20-11 at the half. Both teams struggled on offense again in the third quarter as the Vikings were shut out, and MHC scored six.


In the final stanza, MHC outscored Bertrand 16-2.

For Bertrand, Brooklyn Evans had four points, and Katelyn Evans and Shelby Schoene each had three.


Caylie Softley's 15 points led MHC, Blayklee Farr had 12, and Karissa Stengel had nine points.


Bertrand is now 6-10 and is the #6 in the East seed for the RPAC Tournament and will play #3 seed Southern Valley on Friday at 6:00 P.M. CT on Friday in Bertrand.


MHC is now 14-2 and will be the #1 seed in the West of the RPAC Tourney. They will play #8 seeded Sutherland on Friday at 3:00 P.M. in Maxwell.

The boys game was a thriller and Bertrand captured the victory 64-56.


In the first, the Vikings dealt with some foul trouble as Thunder Nelson picked up two quick fouls. Both teams were strong on defense in the opening period, but Bertrand led 7-5 after one.


In the second quarter, the offense picked up big time. Bertrand kept their narrow lead, 26-25 heading to halftime. In the third, Bertrand did create some space, going up 37-28 with 3:41 to go in the quarter. The Wolves called a timeout and erased that deficit quickly, as they were up 42-41 going to the fourth.


In the final quarter, it was back and forth, to begin with. Bertrand, though, got a big three-pointer with 3:01 to go in the game from Kayden Hatfield to make it 58-51.


MHC wouldn't go away as Charlie Callis hit a three with 1:07 to go and it was 60-56 with 1:07 to go. Bertrand, though, was able to do enough to secure the win.


After the game, we chatted with Kayden Hatfield to get his thoughts on the victory.






Kade Broz led MHC with 14 points, Grady Erickson had 11, and Charlie Callis had 11 off the bench.


For Bertrand, they are on a seven-game winning streak, and Marcus Hernandez dominated the game with 25 points, Thunder and Hunter Nelson each had 13 points, and Hatfield scored 11.


MHC falls to 9-6 and will play on Saturday as the #5 seed in the West for the RPAC Tournament. They play #4 seeded Paxton in Maxwell at 2:30 P.M. CT.


Bertrand moves to 12-4 and will be the #2 seed on the East side of the RPAC Tournament, and will play #7 seed Southern Valley in Bertrand at 5:30 P.M. CT.
