Entering Year Three of the RPAC Rundown

By: Evan Jones

On July 16th, 2022, I made an official announcement that I would be dipping my toes back into the media as a side job while maintaining my employment at the time at First Central Bank in Cambridge. If you would have told me today, I would be doing this full-time, I would have said you were nuts.

Life moves at a crazy speed. Things change all of the time. And when you think you have it all figured out, you really don't. That's life, man.

When I announced I would be going back into the media, I announced it would be "Best Boy Media." Basically, this would be the hub and RPAC Rundown would be part of that. Well, the RPAC Rundown has grown much faster than I anticipated, which is such a blessing. So Best Boy Media is still there and someday I hope to do more projects and work with it.

Through trials, failures, successes, and everything in between, here we are. Running a business full-time covering the Republican Plains Activities Conference. Year two, was incredible and I'd like to detail some things we have gone through and what awesome items have come about as we go through this journey.

Our Work is Part of Our Identity

They always say this shouldn't be the case. And if that's how you feel, all the power to you. Everyone is different. For me, my career choice and the work I do is pivotal to my happiness. There are 24 hours a day and a third or more of those hours are spent working. I ought to enjoy it right? We do, sure some really frustrating things happen. That's any job. And when your run your own business, there are so many different challenges too. Just have to choose what hard you want.

And we feel so fulfilled in the work we do. It fills our cup. We take it seriously but have a ton of fun in the process. We have sculpted this career though, with it being part of our identity, that it is also family-friendly. You often see us all together. We cherish our time together.

Seek Help When You Need It

Asking for help is so difficult. Now, this section is a little bit more personal. Late in the summer last year, I was struggling with fulfillment in my life. So I sought out help. My brother-in-law, Jerrel Alexander, runs Alexander Wellness Co. He is a Life Coach. So basically I told him what I needed. And when we got right down to it, I needed to find a way to make the RPAC Rundown my full-time job.

In the past, I have not been much of a risk-taker. Quitting your day job to go full-tilt with a dream? That was insane to me. I had security and safety in my job at the time. But Jerrel helped me realize it was time to take a chance and bet on myself. Jerrel clearly set aside our family relationship, putting me in uncomfortable situations. And I was better for it.

Relationships are Huge for Us

Since getting into the media business out of high school, I learned that this a career choice in which relationships are key. Between the schools, coaches, kids, advertisers, etc. they are all important.

I have maintained a saying that I take seriously: Relationships, make them, build them, and keep them.

This past year we have gotten to know so many more people across RPAC Country. We are so grateful for that.

We Continue to Learn All of the Time

I love to learn now. Use to be something I didn't enjoy. Wanted to just know things. Not learn. Now, with all of the mediums we dabble in, we have to learn. Video has been something we have really taken on, and that was not the original plan, but you adapt. You have to pivot. And pivoting meant learning too.

Every day we learn something new.

We are Still Scratching the Surface

One trait we have at the RPAC Rundown is we are never quite settled. It's a blessing and a curse. We are constantly looking at ways we can improve and expand our coverage. We feel like we owe it to ourselves and to all of you that we keep finding ways to do this better.

So here's to year three I think it's going to be special.
