First Stand-Alone NSAA Girls Wrestling State Tournament - Three Advance to Semifinals

Tuesday afternoon kicked off the first-ever stand-alone NSAA Girls State Wrestling Championship in Omaha at the CHI Health Center. The weather didn't play a role in the atmosphere, as the lower bowl was packed with fans to cheer on the wrestlers during this historical tournament. The RPAC was well represented, with 11 wrestlers from five schools. All wrestlers are still alive, and three are wrestling in the semifinals. At 100 pounds, Capri Sayer of Southwest entered the state tournament with a record of 29-11 and faced Hadley Mazzulla of Auburn. Sayer wrestled hard, but fell to Mazzulla in 5:45. Sayer will wrestle in the first round of consolation matches Wednesday morning against Mishayla Slaymaker of Boone Central.


At 105 pounds, Laney Becker of Southern Valley/Arapahoe began the tournament with a record of 22-4. She wrestled Sadie Keogh of West Holt and lost to Keogh by a 9-4 decision. Becker falls to the consolation bracket and will wrestle Mattaya Mills of Sutherland on Wednesday morning.



Also at 105 pounds is Sutherland's Mattaya Mills. Mills started the tournament with a record of 28-11 and faced Alejandra Reyes of Johnson County Central. Mills fell to Reyes in 1:29 to fall to the consolation brackets. Mills will wrestle Laney Becker of Southern Valley/Arapahoe on Wednesday morning.


Ceann McIntosh of Maxwell wrestled at 110 pounds and entered the tournament with a record of 26-10. McIntosh drew Addisyn Darling of Yutan first and fell in 2:25, falling to the consolation bracket. McIntosh will face Isabelle Streff of Pierce on Wednesday morning.


Hayley Serfontein of Southern Valley/Arapahoe entered the state tournament with a record of 28-6 at 110 pounds. Serfontein battled with Ava Cleveland of Summerland and defeated her by fall in 5:06. That win advanced Serfontein to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Serfontein faced Haylee Trew of Johnson County Central.



In Serfontein's quarterfinal match against Trew, Serfontein was defeated by major decision 18-4. She will face the winner of Ceann McIntosh of Maxwell and Isabelle Streff of Pierce in the second round of the consolation bracket on Wednesday morning.


At 115 pounds, Rylan Custard of Southwest entered the state tournament undefeated with a record of 41-0. Custard faced Gentry Poulsen of Elkhorn Valley and was able to make quick work as she pinned Poulsen in 1:28 to advance to the quarterfinals. She faced Amillionna Reyes of Gibbon in that quarterfinal match.



In R. Custard's quarterfinal match, it was the same song and dance, only faster. She defeated Reyes by fall in 0:24 to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. She will take on Bettie Chambers of Palmyra.



Ambie Custard entered the state tournament with a 44-0 record at 135 pounds. Custard wrestled JoLee Gewecke of Fillmore Central in the first round and pinned Gewecke in 3:03 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Custard faced Bethany Arens of Crofton/Bloomfield.



In A. Custard's quarterfinal match, she defeated Arens by fall in 1:49 to advance to Wednesday's semifinals. Custard will have her hands full with Yutan's Alexis Pehrson, a three-time state finalist and two-time state champion who came into the tournament with a record of 47-1. They will wrestle on Wednesday afternoon.



At 190 pounds, Addison Arvdal of Sutherland entered the tournament undefeated with a 38-0 record. She defeated Dianna Flores of Arlington in her first match by fall in 1:23 to advance to the quarterfinals. Arvdal faced Libby Evans of Elgin Public/Pope John in the quarterfinals.



Arvdal defeated Evans by fall in 1:13 to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. She will face Faith Klabenes of Wilber-Clatonia.



Also at 190 pounds is Paxton's Skylar Johnson. Johnson entered the state tournament with a record of 32-11. She defeated Kloe Knutson of Louisville by an 18-12 decision in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. She faced Faith Klabenes of Wilber-Clatonia in the quarterfinal match.


In Johnson's quarterfinal match, she fell to Klabenes by fall in 1:49. Johnson will face the winner of Katrina Schreiner of Logan View and Haley Dunn of Perkins County in the second round of the consolation bracket on Wednesday morning.



Brooke Lentz of Southern Valley/Arapahoe and Madelyn Tryon of Southwest faced each other in the tournament's first round at 235 pounds. Lentz entered the tournament with a record of 22-14, and Tryon entered the tournament with a record of 35-5. Tryon defeated Lentz by fall in 3:41. Lentz will wrestle in the consolation matches on Wednesday morning against Ava Grimes from Humbolt-Table Rock-Steinauer, and Tryon advanced to the quarterfinals against Brooklyn Snyder of Brancroft-Rosalie.

Tryon lost her quarterfinal match to Snyder by a 4-3 decision and will wrestle again in the second round of the consolation brackets Wednesday morning. She will face the winner of JaeLeigh Miller of Lyons-Decatur Northeast and Nevaeh Bryant of Wood River.


Wrestling in the first-round consolation matches that begin Wednesday morning at 9:00 A.M. CT will be Capri Sayer of Southwest, Laney Becker of Southern Valley/Arapahoe, Mattaya Mills of Sutherland, Ceann McIntosh of Maxwell, and Brooke Lentz of Southern Valley/Arapahoe.


Wrestling in the second-round consolation matches, following the first round on Wednesday morning, are Hayley Serfontein of Southern Valley/Arapahoe, Skylar Johnson of Paxton, and Madelyn Tryon of Southwest.


Wrestling in the semifinals Wednesday at 12:30 P.M. CT are Rylan Custard of Southwest, Ambie Custard of Southwest, and Addison Arvdal of Sutherland.
