
We blinked and the girls basketball season is over. Alma and Southwest qualified for the 2025 Class D1 State Basketball Tournament. Alma qualified for state for the first time in school history and Southwest qualified for the first time as Southwest. Check out how these two squads did at the state tournament in the blog.
Alma
The Cardinals qualified for the state tournament and earned the #5 seed in Class D1. They faced a familiar opponent in the quarterfinals as they faced #4 Superior. Alma lost to the Wildcats earlier in the season on January 4th, 53-34. This time, the Cardinals came out on top defeating Superior 45-36, earning their first win in the state tournament as well. Tierston Moore had 16 points and seven steals, Chayse Molzahn had six points and eight blocks, along with seven boards. Kamryn Scott and Vayden Epp each had nine points and Kamri Neal had four. In the semifinals, the Cardinals drew #1 seed Pender who was looking for their third straight championship. Alma fought hard but ultimately couldn't get the win as they lost to the Pendragons 53-40. Kamryn Scott had 13 points, Tierston Moore had eight points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and four steals, Kamri Neal scored six, Chayse Molzahn had six, Vayden Epp finished with seven points and seven rebounds, and Miley Whitney had two. In the 3rd place consolation game, Alma faced #6 Cedar Catholic. Win or lose, the Alma Cardinals were going to make history. Alma again played hard until the very end but fell 48-33. For Alma, it was similar to Friday's semifinal game; they had excellent looks on offense, but the ball just wouldn't go in the hoop. They finish 4th Place in Class D1. Kamryn Scott scored 17 points and had seven rebounds, Tierston Moore scored six, had 12 rebounds, three assists, and three steals, Miley Whitney scored five, and Kamri Neal had seven rebounds and three steals. Alma ends their season with a 21-8 record.
The Cardinals ' head coach, Amanda Davis, said about Alma's state tournament run: "The girls played really well, but just couldn't get shots to fall. Overall, I was so proud of how Alma played in the tournament. They showed that we deserved to be there. These girls definitely made Alma proud."
Southwest
Southwest qualified for the D1 State Tournament and earned the #3 seed. The Roughriders faced #6 Cedar Catholic and fell 54-27. Aspen, Billeter had seven points and six rebounds, and Kyra Nelms and Atleigh Nelms had six. Kyra had seven boards too. Anastasia Gallegos and Allison VanPelt each had four. Southwest shot 20% from the field, 1-16 from three. They had 41 rebounds and 28 turnovers. To read more about this game, click here.
