We are getting to the latter portion of the softball season for the Southern Valley/Alma Saints and other teams across the state. This week on Thursday, seeding will be released for subdistricts will be released and then subdistrict play will begin the next week.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Some big games were played this past week on the diamond and will be again this week. Let's check out the past week's results. The Saints had three games and went 2-1.
They started at Central City on Monday and split games with Central City and Ord. In the win over Ord, Southern Valley/Alma won 8-7. The Saints started with a run in the top half of the first inning, the Saints scored a run but Ord answered with three runs to lead 3-1. The Saints again scored some runs but Ord answered the call with four of their own. It was 7-3 at that point.
From that point on, the comeback was in effect. The Saints scored one run in the third and fourth innings, and then three in the top of the fifth to get up 8-7 and secure the lead, and then the win.
The Saints had six hits as a team and forced six walks. Ava Dunse had two hits and an RBI, and Eden Johnson was 1-3 with two RBI's. Bryn Baily was 1-2 with an RBI, and Maci Adams was 1-2 with an RBI. In the circle, Mikah Schultz went 3.1 innings, allowed two hits, and had two strikeouts.
In their other game, they fell to Central City 8-2. Central City jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and kept it rolling from there. They scored three more in the second and one in the bottom of the third. Southern Valley/Alma scored a run in the third and fourth innings.
Amy Luke was 1-2 with an RBI. Brynn Baily was 1-2 with an RBI.
On Thursday, the Saints played Hwy 6 and won in a high-scoring affair, 13-10.
The Saints racked up 17 hits in the game including a 4-4 outing by Brynn Baily and she had three 3 RBI's. Mikah Schultz had four RBI's on a 2-4 day, and Natalee Holste was 2-4 with two RBI's.
The Saints pitchers allowed 10 walks which led to Hwy 6 scoring at a high level. But, the Saints did a nice job of limiting the damage.
Southern Valley/Alma is now 14-8 and will play Chase County and Kearney Catholic on Tuesday at home in a Triangular. Then, they will face Kearney Catholic at home on Thursday.
