Undefeated Arvdal and Custard Crowned Class B State Champions


Day two of the first stand-alone NSAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament is over. All RPAC wrestlers had matches today, but two wrestled for gold. The Southwest girls also finished in the top 10 in the team race. Check out how each of the girls wrestled throughout the day, how the team standings shook out, and career milestones. First Round Consolation Matches


Capri Sayer of Southwest wrestled in the first round of the consolation matches against Mishayla Slaymaker of Boone Central at 100 pounds on Wednesday morning. Sayer defeated Slaymaker by major decision 11-3 to advance to the second-round consolation matches, where she faced Aubrie Breed of Aurora.


At 105 pounds, Laney Becker of Southern Valley/Arapahoe and Mattaya Mills of Sutherland faced each other in the first round to stay alive in the tournament. Becker came out on top as she defeated Mills by fall in 1:57. Mills' season ended with a record of 28-13, and Becker advanced to the second-round consolation matches where she faced Paisley Hoffman of Ainsworth.

Ceann McIntosh of Maxwell wrestled in the first-round consolation match at 110 pounds against Isabelle Streff of Pierce. McIntosh defeated Streff by fall in 2:09 to advance to the second-round consolation matches, where she faced Hayley Serfontein of Southern Valley/Arapahoe. This was the first state tournament win in their school program for girls wrestling.


Brooke Lentz of Southern Valley/Arapahoe wrestled at 235 in the first-round consolation matches against Ava Grimes of Humbolt-Table Rock-Steinauer. Lentz fell to Grimes in 2:51 and ended her season with a record of 22-16.



Second Round Consolation Matches


In the second round of the consolation brackets at 100 pounds, Sayer of Southwest faced Aubrie Breed of Aurora. Sayer lost to Breed by a 9-2 decision to end her season with a record of 30-12.


Becker of Southern Valley/Arapahoe faced Paisley Hoffman of Ainsworth and lost to Hoffman by major decision 11-1 at 105 pounds. Becker ends her season with a record of 23-6.


At 110 pounds, McIntosh of Maxwell met up with Hayley Serfontein of Southern Valley/Arapahoe. Serfontein defeated McIntosh by fall in 4:15 to advance to the third round of the consolation matches to wrestle Caly Settles of Aurora. McIntosh ended her season with a record of 27-11.


Skyler Johnson of Paxton wrestled in the second round of the consolation matches at 190 pounds against Katrina Schreiner of Logan View. Johnson made quick work as she secured the win via fall in 0:55. She advanced to the third round of the consolation matches, where she faced Libby Evans of Elgin Public Pope John.


At 235 pounds, Madelyn Tryon of Southwest faced JaeLeigh Miller of Lyons-Decatur Northeast and earned the win by fall in 2:03 to advance to the third round. In that third-round match, Tryon faced Lizbeth Gonzalez of West Point-Beemer.



Third Round Consolation Matches


In the third round of the consolation matches, Serfontein of Southern Valley/Arapahoe faced Caly Settles of Aurora at 110 pounds, and a win would secure her a medal. Unfortunately, Serfontein loses in heartbreaking fashion, losing by a 1-0 decision to Settles. Serfontein finishes her season with a record of 30-8.


Johnson of Paxton faced Libby Evans of Elgin Public Pope John at 190 in the third round of consolation brackets and fell in 3:12 to end her season. Johnson was just short of securing a medal and finished her season with a record of 34-13.


Tryon of Southwest wrestled Lizbeth Gonzalez of West Point-Beemer at 235 in the third round of the consolation bracket. She secured herself a medal with a win by fall in 3:26 over Gonzalez to advance to the consolation semifinals where she would wrestle Morgan Hawkins of Ansley-Litchfield.



Semifinals


In the semifinals, Rylan Custard of Southwest faced Bettie Chambers of Palmyra at 115 pounds. It was a very tough match, but ultimately, Custard fell to Chambers in 5:37 and moved to the consolation semifinals while suffering her first loss of the year. Chambers went on to be the Class B State Champion at 115 pounds. Custard would face Hadleigh Collision of Pierce in that 3rd and 4th place match.



Ambie Custard of Southwest faced Alexis Pehrson of Yutan at 135 pounds. You knew this one would be a battle on paper, and it didn't disappoint. Custard was able to pin Pehrson in 4:58 to advance to the state championship match against Rylan Hansen of Stanton. This was also Ambie's 100th win. What a match; your 100th win advanced you to the state finals!




At 190 pounds, Addison Arvdal of Sutherland faced Libby Evans of Elgin Public/Pope John and wasn't messing around and took care of business with a pin in 0:52 to advance to the state championship match against Ida Bumgarner of Broken Bow.



Consolation Semifinals


In the consolation semifinals, R. Custard faced Hadleigh Collision of Pierce at 115 pounds. Custard had a nice bounce-back win as she defeated Collision by a 7-3 decision and advanced to the 3rd and 4th place match, where she would face Meredith Bargen of Lakeview.



Tryon faced Morgan Hawkins of Ansley-Litchfield at 235 pounds in the consolation semifinals. Hawkins defeated Tryon by fall in 4:26, sending Tryon to the 5th and 6th place match against Brooklyn Snyder of Bancroft-Rosalie. At the state tournament last year, Tryon placed 6th.


Medal Matches


In the 5th and 6th place match at 235, Tryon of Southwest faced Brooklyn Snyder of Bancroft-Rosalie. Tryon battled hard but came up short against Snyder as she lost 2-0, placing 6th. She finishes with a record of 38-8.



In the 3rd and 4th place match at 115 pounds, R. Custard of Southwest faced Meredith Bargen of Lakeview. Custard placed 3rd, earning the 11-1 major decision win over Bargen. Custard finished the year with a record of 45-1.


In the championship match for 135, A. Custard of Southwest faced off with Rylan Hansen of Stanton at 135 pounds. Hansen entered the state tournament with a record of 36-3. Custard defeated Hansen by a 9-3 decision to be crowned the Class B 135-pound State Champion. Custard finished the season with a 48-0 record and a career record of 101-6.



At 190 pounds, Arvdal of Sutherland faced Ida Bumgarner of Broken Bow in the championship match. Bumgarner entered the tournament with a 26-7 record. Arvdal didn't have a match longer than 90 seconds coming into this match, and she had won each of them by fall. Well, this match was no different. She defeated Bumgarner by fall in 3:19. Arvdal is the Class B 190-pound State Champion, and she finished her sophomore season with a 42-0 record.



The girls season is now wrapped up, and we are gearing up for the boys tournament, which begins Thursday morning and runs through Saturday. Stay tuned for our coverage of that tournament.
