VIKINGS DOMINATE EAGLES IN WEEK ONE OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON

BERTRAND- It was a pretty simple game plan for the Bertrand Vikings on Friday night. Run the ball and run it some more. That philosophy led to a 34-0 win against Overton on Senior night.

On the first drive of the night, Bertrand took the ball and marched right down the field on an eight play drive as junior Gabe Bojorquez punched it in from two yards out, and the Vikings converted the two point conversion to go up 8-0 with 8:14 to go in the first quarter. Bertrand then got a stop on defense and scored again, this time senior quarterback Owen Kaps from three yards on the ground at the 5:11 mark in the first period. Dawson Newcomb converted the extra point and the Vikings went into the second quarter up 15-0.

In the second quarter for the Vikings, the continued their strong run game as Bojorquez punched it in again from 23 yards out and Newcomb again hit the extra point pushing the lead to 22-0 with 6:30 remaining before halftime. The Vikings again got another stop, and Kaps scampered in for a six-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 28-0 lead, and that's what the score read heading into halftime.

Owen Kaps runs through a massive hole created by the offensive line.

In the second half, the Vikings struggled to get much going, but their defense stood tall against the Eagles maintaining a shut out through the duration of the game. The next score of the game didn't come until the 9:03 mark in the fourth quarter when Kaps again scored on a two yard run to boost their lead to 34-0. From there, the Viking defense held strong and on the offensive side they ran out the clock to secure the win.

Bojorquez scores from a few yards out. He finished with 73 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Head Coach of the Vikings Steve Colfack was pleased with his team's performance. "We came out and played well right off the bat...we ran, ran, ran, and our defense I thought did some great things."

Bertrand dominated the stat column as well with 368 yards of total offense and averaged six yards per play. Bertrand had 340 yards on the ground as a team and were led by Kaps with 184 yards and three scores. Kaps was 7-11 with 28 yards passing too. Jc Kehr had a nice game too as a change of pace back with 60 yards.

Defensively for Bertrand, Adan Gonzales had 10.5 tackles including one sack too.

For Overton, Brendan McCarter led the way with 37 yards rushing.

For Bertrand they will battle Elm Creek next Friday, and Overton will take on Axtell next week.
