Bertrand made the trip down Highway 23 on Friday evening to face the Raiders of Medicine Valley for a girls and boys basketball double-header. The Vikings went back east happy as both the girls and the boys walked off the court with wins.
In the girls game, it was Bertrand winning 39-28. Bertrand came out with solid shooting and staked out a 12-5 lead. Bertrand shot the ball well again in the second quarter, even if it only yielded eight points. They were up 20-11 going into the half.
In the third quarter, Medicine Valley began to chip away at the lead with some tough defense and then made some shots themselves. They cut the deficit to 28-22 going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, they continued to try and make a push, getting within a couple of possessions a couple of times. But the Vikings shut the door on the comeback effort with tight defense and got their offense going.
Medicine Valley was led by Alaina Eberle with eight points. Sienna Houghtelling had six. The Raiders are 8-10 on the year.
Bertrand had a spread-out scoring effect with Brooklyn Evans putting up nine, Emma Brown scoring eight points, and Addison Andersen having seven. Bertrand is now 6-11 on the season.
We caught up with Andersen after the game and talked about the victory.
In the boys matchup was a Bertrand victory 60-43. The game though, was much closer for three quarters. In the opening, Bertrand came out firing and led 16-7 after the opening eight minutes. In the second quarter, both squads displayed some shot-making as Medicine Valley scored 14 points and trimmed the deficit to 26-21 at the half.
The third quarter was dominated by Medicine Valley scoring 15 points while holding the Vikings to eight. The Raiders led 36-34 going into the last quarter. Mason and Austin Roblee each hit some big three-pointers in the third quarter.
Bertrand ended up exploding on offense in the final period, scoring 26 points and shut down the Raiders with just seven points.
Late in the game, Dawson Newcomb hit some big free throws to secure the lead for Bertrand and distance themselves late.
Tyce Pate led Medicine Valley with 11 points and Mason Roblee had 10. The Raiders are 7-11 on the season now.
Bertrand was led by Marcus Hernandez with 15 points and Newcomb had 12 points. Jc Kehr had 10. The Vikings improve to 7-8 this season. We chatted with Marcus Hernandez after the game to get his thoughts on the victory.
