Wolves Win Thriller Over Wildcats on Homecoming Night

What a game. It was one of those battles that really no one deserved to lose. Maywood-Hayes Center hosted Maxwell on Thursday night for the Wolves Homecoming Game. It was a game that went down to the wire like we thought it would. Eventually though, Maywood-Hayes Center won 21-20.

Maxwell had the first possession of the game and came out strong. They had a 13-play drive that took 7:08 of the first quarter. Kole Jones punched it in, the two-point conversion was good and it was 8-0 with 4:52 to go in the first. Maywood-Hayes Center drove deep into Maxwell territory on their 15-yard line. But, they turned it over on downs and Maxwell had the ball back.

Maxwell couldn't get much going and no harm was done.

At the end of the first quarter, it was 8-0 in favor of Maxwell.

In the second quarter, it was a little stagnant. Until the last four minutes or so. Maxwell had a long 11-play drive as Kole Jones ran in again with 1:01 to go and all of a sudden Maxwell was up 14-0.

Maywood-Hayes Center though, wasn't going to go to the half without being aggressive. Quarterback Kody Schwenk hit Carlo Romero on the drive's third play, a 38-yard pass, and then on the next play from 16 yards away for a touchdown. The extra point was no good and it was 14-6.

That's what the score read at the intermission.

The Wolves came out of the half as the aggressors. They put together a seven-play drive that was capped off by a five-yard touchdown run by Grady Erickson with 9:26 to go in the quarter. The conversion was good and it was tied up at 14-14.

Later in the quarter, Maxwell took control of a one-yard run by Jones at 4:26 to go in the third. They were unable to get the conversion but they led 20-14.

We had one more score before the end of the quarter. Erickson scored again from three yards away with 1:42 to go in the third. The extra point was good and it was 21-20. That's what it was going to the fourth period.

In the final quarter, both teams on defense were phenomenal. Maxwell had some opportunities to move the ball and take the lead but the Wolves made stops. And on the flipside, MHC had the chance to extend their lead and the Wildcats were tough.

We caught up with the Head Coach of the Wolves, Tanner Collins, after the game. Our postgame interviews are brought to you by Acme Printing Company.
